Developer diary #2: the world was built in 7 days…

Welcome warriors, I see a few new faces in the crowd: covered in dust and eager to learn. My name is Mark, and I will be your wasteland guide…

How do you create a world? As you’ve probably guessed, theme is very important to me: it immerses you in the experience and you feel part of a world that lives and breathes around you. I love post-apocalyptic stuff- the idea of our world being reclaimed by nature, our once majestic buildings overgrown. Something that is both familiar and alien at the same time. I decided not to explain how the Wasteland came to be: with mankind fighting for its very existence I doubt anyone was taking notes, and perhaps it is something that I may pursue in the future- who knows(not me!). So I decided on a desolate wasteland where cities no longer exist; all that remains of our existance are a few sections of road which are often buried by shifting sands, and the vehicles that we survived in. It is not any specific country as it’s a worldwide phenomenon, so you can fill in some blanks yourselves.
It made sense that with civilization gone we would have no need of money so people could trade what they found on their travels, or salvage as it’s known in the game: pieces of lost technology which can make life a little bit easier. Which means salvage can be the difference between life and death. People are going to fight over anything of value, so they have created groups- convoys of heavily armed vehicles that protect each other and raise their chances of success. You have to align yourself with the right people though; vegans would have a tough time with cannibals, right? So I began to think about who would live here; what their motives and struggles were. But I think we can meet them all next week!

Stay safe in the Wastes, and never go out alone…
